Carly Johnson is a Senior majoring in both Sociology and Criminology with a minor in Political Science. Carly was an intern for the ECDB project in the fall of 2024.

Why did you want to intern with the TRC?

I have always had a huge passion for understanding the motivation behind crime and wanting to make a change. When talking with Dr. Shields, he recommended the internship, and it sounded like an amazing opportunity to get involved. I also wanted to gain more experience with the analytic side of Criminology!

How has working at the TRC prepared you for your career and what have you learned?

Interning at the TRC has allowed me to find clarity on what I want to do in the future and has opened new career paths. Being able to talk with the guest speakers and staff has shown me the different paths and experiences that are offered within the criminal justice field. Learning how to analyze and code all of the cases has allowed me a better understanding of the motivation behind crimes!

What advice do you have for future interns?

My advice for future interns is to make connections and get involved! Talking with the guest speakers, the TRC staff, or the other interns can be a huge benefit to you!

What is a fun fact about yourself?

A fun fact about me is that I have six dogs and three cats!
