Leila Klem is a sophomore majoring in Criminology with a minor in Psychology. Leila was an intern for the ECDB project in the fall of 2025.

Why did you want to intern with the TRC?

I wanted to intern with the TRC because it directly aligned with my academic and career interests, and I wanted meaningful, hands-on research experience involving terrorism trends, security analysis, and a better understanding of how extremist threats develop and how they can be prevented.

How has working at the TRC prepared you for your career and what have you learned?

Working for the TRC gave me experience in synthesizing data, strong analytical skills, and time management. It helped me understand the type of work that motivates me, equipped me with useful skills that will be beneficial in any career, and learn more about the professional environments where I see myself making a meaningful contribution. This internship also confirmed that I am on the right path regarding pursuing careers and experiences that involve intelligence analysis, understanding behavior at both the individual and societal levels, and crime prevention.

What advice do you have for future interns?

My advice to future interns is not to stress yourself out over coding and reading court documents. Everyone at the TRC is so helpful and supportive. You will gain so many beneficial skills that will help you wherever your path takes you, so soak it all in and don’t be afraid to ask questions and make connections!

What is a fun fact about yourself?
