The University of Arkansas is hosting a new NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site this summer aiming to foster innovative, data-driven approaches to the study of crime and security data. The goal of the program is to impart transferable skills to students, including crime analytics, data management, data visualization, and professional networking.

The REU site is led by Professors Casey Harris and Jeff Gruenewald from the Department of Sociology and Criminology, along with an interdisciplinary research team of faculty and external mentors.

What is the REU Site All About?

  • Connecting Research to Practice: The REU Site serves as a dynamic bridge between academic research and real-world applications related to crime and security topics. Participants will engage in data-to-practice research, working closely with faculty mentors. From analyzing crime patterns and trends to understanding the impact of social factors, students will gain valuable insights and hands-on experiences that are not always available in the classroom.
  • Building Research Communities: Students will choose from one of three topical areas, including 1) Terrorism and Hate Crimes, 2) Community & Crime, and 3) Crime, Justice, and Health.
  • Fostering Professional Connections: Students will receive one-on-one and group mentoring. Three primary mentors will lead the research communities, and students will receive additional guidance from interdisciplinary faculty and external experts across the nation. Students will gain meaningful connections by interacting directly with professionals engaged in crime and security data analytics, receiving hands-on experience extending beyond what textbooks can provide.
